Are there high tornado frequencies outside of tornado alley?
Tornadoes actually can occur almost anywhere in the nation. And while the middle part of the county has the largest number, other regions are far from immune. Though not located in Tornado Alley proper, Harris County, TX (the Houston area) over the past 20 years has had the greatest chance of having or one more twister touchdowns. Better reporting has shown that central Florida has far more tornadoes than once thought. In the past 20 years, 19 maxi tornadoes have struck the U.S. These monster twisters are at the top of the six point tornado intensity scale (F0 through F5). Alabama has the distinction of leading the nation in F5-class tornadoes, reporting four over the last two decades. In any given year, tornadoes can take detours and strike one area of the nation with unusually great frequency.
