Are there food, drugs, or soaps that can effect my tan?
Certain ingredients in food, shampoos, and soaps can produce photosensitivity, which could lead to overexposure and potential sunburn. Perfumes and colognes may contain Furocoumarins, a compound found in plants and fruits. Their natural oils can cause over-sensitivity to UV light. Foods containing photosensitizing agents include celery, carrots, lime, coriander, parsley, fennel, dill, buttercup, mustard, and fig. Not everyone will experience a reaction, or the same level of reaction, although a reaction could appear in someone with no history of problems. By the same token, a reaction may not be experienced every time by someone who is sensitive to these ingredients. Some medications are photosensitizing, and tanning is not recommended if you are taking them, because they can increase your risk of overexposure. Speak to your physician or consult with your tanning professional for a list of photosensitizing medications.
