Are There Different Winter And Summer Foods?
To the best of my knowledge there is only one difference and that is birds require more fat in their diets during winter months. Whether this is fact or not, I am not entirely sure but I alter their foods in the winter regardless. During the winter months I continue with my regular foods in the feeders but add Suet Cakes to the menu. Suet cakes are shaped treats made from lard or beef fat that has been melted down to add special snacks. The fat then becomes solid again. Let me explain with this recipe. Easy Suet Cake Save your empty cat food cans or tuna cans to shape the cakes. I have also used a loaf pan and later cut cakes from it. Only use the loaf pan if you have a suet cage to put the cut slab in. You can purchase the cages for under $5.00 usually. 2 Cups of lard or drippings from bacon/beef (I suggest a nice mix) 1 Cup of Peanut Butter 1.5 Cups of Oatmeal 1 Cup of Birdseed Melt the lard/drippings and peanut butter together in an old pan or whatever. When it has melted, remove it
