Are there different types of DSL modems?
Yes. There are two types – bridges and routers. A bridge is a low cost solution that serves as a connection between New Edge Networks equipment and the PC or LAN at the customer location. The bridge takes the high frequency analog signal that is sent on the phone line and converts it to a usable digital data flow that is usable by the end-user PC or LAN. Bridges provide only limited functionality and are commonly deployed for use with small-office-home-office and residential end-users. Many of the telephone companies provide only bridged services. Routers add functionality and additional security features. Routers are crucial for high-availability and redundant network configurations. New Edge Networks Efficient routers also add firewall features and optional VPN support for secure connections.
