Are there different types of compression stockings?
There are two types of compression stockings, or support hose: Gradient and anti-embolism. Gradient compression stockings are woven in such a way that the compression level lessens towards the top of the hose. Doctors will typically recommend these stockings for those who are inactive due to being bed-ridden for long periods of time, wheelchair bound, or to prevent post-operative swelling, edema, and blood pooling in their legs and feet. As these type of compression stockings are non-prescriptive, they can be purchased at a pharmacy or medical supply store. Anti-embolism support hose or better known as TED hose are usually only worn if non-ambulatory or if a person is confined to a hospital bed post-surgery. If needed long term, custom-fitted TED support hose will most likely be prescribed by your doctor.
