Are there different types of biosolids?
Yes. In addition to the different application methods described above (liquid vs. solid), there are two categories of biosolids as set by the U.S. EPA. Class B biosolids are approved for application on crops that will not be consumed by people, such as hay, grass, or seed crops. Class B biosolids have extremely low levels of pathogens and are safe for human exposure in production, transport, and application. Class A biosolids are approved for application on human food crops and have virtually undetectable levels of pathogens. They are subject to an additional level of treatment such as exposure to heat, ultraviolet radiation, or chemical application. Albany produces only Class B biosolids.
