Are There Different Names For Certain Types Of Wind?
In Denver and The Front Range one of the most famous winds is the “Chinook”. This is a warming wind that flows down the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains. Here’s what happens, when air flows in from the West over Colorado it loses a lot of it’s moisture in the mountains as rain or snow. Then as the westerly wind continues down the Eastern Slope of the Rockies it smashes down or condenses over the eastern plains. This warms the air rapidly and helps to speed up the wind flow. Sometimes in the winter a Chinook wind can warm up the temperature by about 40 to 50 degrees in just a few hours. This helps to melt any snow that is on the ground almost magically. That is why the Chinook is nicknamed the “Snow Eater”. Here are just a few other names of wind around the country and the world.
