Different valve manufacturers have different ways of connecting the handles onto the valves. And, the handles for one company are likely incompatible with the valves made by another. You have to know the manufacturer to get the right replacement handles. This might be on a stamp or sticker inside the handle. Otherwise, it would be on the valve body (which, unfortunately, you can’t see because it’s inside the wall). Your only option is to measure the length and diameter of the valve stem, note how the handle is secured (usually a screw in the middle of the stem), count how many splines there are on the stem, etc., and even draw it out. Then go to a plumbing or home improvement store and look at what’s available. Or, show your drawing and specs to the sales person. They might know the manufacturer by looking at it.
