Are there different approaches to Project Management?

There are a number of approaches to project management but there are generally two that are prevalent. First is the “traditional” approach which normally uses a five step process to project completion. There are different variations and names for all of these five steps but the most widely used list is initiation, planning, production, monitoring and completion. Most of the larger projects will go thought the planning, production and monitoring stages several times before completion. Second is the agile software development approach. This approach breaks down the project into smaller individual tasks instead of one complete task. It is also called the “spiral” approach because of the completion of one of the smaller tasks then starts with the beginning of another task. The idea of this approach is to create as little cost and overhead as possible. It is accomplished by rationale, justification, documentation, reporting, meetings and permission.
