There are even manufacturers (such as Voodoo PC) that specialize in custom-building. Has there been an attempt to custom make a MacOS X compatible mobile computer? I am sure there has been, but not commercially; Apple would eat alive anyone who tried it. In fact, one of the first things Steve Jobs killed when he returned to Apple as CEO was Mac cloning (a program whereby third-party manufacturers could obtain licenses to build Mac-compatible computers and sell them under their brand names). Technologically, it shouldn’t be an insurmountable problem though. MacOS X is really not an operating system; it’s a windowing environment and a set of utilities running on top of FreeBSD (hence, by the way, the letter X; it signifies that it’s an X Window replacement). And FreeBSD has run on PC hardware for ages… Are there many off-the-shelf-parts for custom built mobile computers? Yes and no.
