Are there copyright laws at work here? Are there royalty issues involved here?
It is my opinion that if anyone has a legal claim on this data it is the players (who could be said to be doing something “creative” – a key word in copyright matters). I suppose that if this were the case then tournaments could force participants to sign a release and then they would “own” the data. I believe, however, that a court of law would never accept such claims given the current copyright laws. How do you finance your vugraph service? We write software that collects the data as well as software for presenting this data either to a live audience, as an “after the fact” web presentation, or as live broadcast over the Internet. We license this software to various companies and tournaments so that they can create these presentations themselves.
