Are there controls to ensure animals are not mistreated?
> The most important control is the fact that well kept animals are healthier, and healthy animals are more productive and provide higher quality food products. Like any animal owner, farmers are also subject to laws dealing with the treatment of animals, as well as regulations, policies and guidelines developed by the farming and food community itself. In Canada, standards for animal care have been set out in Recommended Codes of Practice. These codes are drafted by livestock specialists at the request of farmers, in consultation with government and the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies. They are revised periodically to reflect advances in animal husbandry. Each agricultural sector has implemented various inspection, training and educational programs which address animal care and handling. Government and industry regulations are also in place to control the production, transportation, marketing and processing of livestock and poultry. Visit OFAC’s “Legislation and Standards for
