Are there concerns that price rises would put large families off buying school lunches?
Charlie Werner – We used to have reduced rates for 2nd/3rd children, but this is currently not in place. Some schools that have adopted healthy menus have seen a drop, some a rise. This tends to be linked to the social deprivation in the area. Panel – How much do you charge at the moment? Charlie Werner – 1.45 Panel – In consultation did you get feedback on food provided by parents at home? Charlie Werner – The parents in the action groups/governors are the keen ones so our results probably didn’t include those who don’t provide healthy options at home. Panel – Is it possible to police packed lunches or does that raise freedom of choice issues? Charlie Werner – At a school where I was head, I banned unhealthy break snacks, such as crisps, but didn’t do the same with lunches as I felt it was a step too far. It could possibly be done now. Panel – It seems that implementing these plans is difficult in areas of social deprivation. Charlie Werner – It’s harder, but potentially can be done.
