Are there certain grappling techniques that cannot be used in Irish MMA?
I.e. heel hooks, neck cranks etc. A: The illegal grappling techniques would be spinal attacks such as neck cranks or anything that twists a major joint like a heel hook or twisting knee bar. The heel hook is a particular one that we all, as refs, single out during the rules meeting as it is a career finisher. The technique goes on so fast it hardly gives the opponent time to tap and by the time he does the damage is already done. Q: Is there a difference in round structure in Amateur, Semi-Pro or Pro fights? A: Again the norm is to have the ‘C’ class bouts to run three x three minute rounds, the PRO ‘B’ are three 4 minute rounds and ‘A’ class are three 5 minute rounds. I have been at shows however when the c and b class are the same and at tournament type events such as Cage Contenders where the A class are three three’s and I remember when David Patterson had four man tournament events, the people involved had two five minute rounds.
