Free firewood is available through the Salvation Army’s Woodlot Project in Wilmington. This year, the project begins in early December and runs through mid-March, program director Dick Maller says. Seniors, families in economic difficulty and others in need are eligible to receive free firewood, which comes from sources like tree trimming services and property owners who remove trees from their land. Volunteers include members of athletic programs at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, church groups, the ROTC, senior citizens and individuals looking to lend a hand.
