Hermaphrodite is an insulting and unacceptable word for most intersexed folks. Their gender identity is from within. Ambiguous sex organs are there for a variety of reasons including chromosmal differences. Usually these, unlike the urban legend here, are not fully functioning if functioning at all. Most are assigned female for reconstructive surgery because the medical profession didn’t think to wait to ask them what sex they are. As a result there have been several suicides when those folks found out after surgery and when they got a little older that they did not have a female identity. There’s a movement (mostly by parents and some physicians and psychiatrists) to hold off sex determination until the child can have a say, but there was one infamous doctor, Dr. John Money, who preferred to listen to himself and get academic kudos for work later held in disrespect.
