The Christmas trees roots are in Saturnalia, the Roman mid-winter festival, when trees outside were not cut down, but decorated with silver, and evergreen trimmings were brought into the home to decorate it for the festival. Many Christmas traditions come from Saturnalia. Modern Pagans celebrate the Solstice, usually under the Germanic name Yule, and decorate a tree indoors. In my house, we call it the Yule tree.
