Are there any viking runes in Britain or Ireland?
Yes, but only a very few have been found. Among the examples is an inscription on a gravestone from the churchyard at St Paul’s cathedral in London which dates to the beginning of the eleventh century. Another, inscribed on a bone comb case found during excavations in Lincoln, asserts confidently that ‘Thorfast made a good comb’. A few runic inscriptions have also been found in Ireland, including pieces of wood and bone from excavations in Dublin. The Isle of Man is the exception to this dearth where over thirty stones and stone crosses with runic inscriptions have been found.
