Are there any unforgivable sins in the Bible?
Since I am guessing at least one answerer will answer your good Q from the perspective of Christianity, let me pick another religion, say Judaism. Jews believe that sins against God may be atoned for. The period between Jewish New Year (Rosh HaShanah) and the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) is intended heavily for this. Prayers on the Day of Atonement are specifically asking God for forgiveness for sins committed against him/her. However, Jews believe that sins committed by one person against another can only be forgiven by the individual who was harmed by the sin. If you struck someone, only (s)he can forgive you. God cannot forgive you for striking another person. If you spoke harshly to an individual, only that person can forgive you–not God. This leads to significant differences. For example, one who murders another person cannot be forgiven. Why not? The murdered individual is no longer living and able to forgive the murderer, no matter how repentant (s)he is. There is an outstandi
the sin against the Holy Spirit. There is a lot of argument about what this is, but Bible explains Bible. Jesus said the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. In Romans 1, Paul says God’s anger is being poured out on those who suppress the truth — and the verb is one of continuing action, in other words a person is consistently suppressing the truth and preferring a lie. Jesus told us He IS the way, the truth, and the life. When you put these together, along with the other indications, it becomes clear that the one sin which cannot be forgiven is refusing the truth, which, ultimately, is Christ Jesus, and preferring the lie. Since salvation is through Christ and Christ alone, this means that one has condemned oneself. By turning away from the source of forgiveness and refusing it, one cannot be forgiven. It’s sort of a logical thing. The Pharisees, in claiming Christ was doing things via demonic power KNEW they were lying. That is why this was, for them, a sin against the Holy Spirit. B
