Are there any threats facing dogs today?
Whereas the greatest threat to many species today is extinction, ironically the opposite is true for dogs. There are just not enough guardians for the number of dogs in the world. And people abandon and relinquish (give up to shelters) their dogs too. This combines to threaten the welfare of dogs and make the need for shelters and rescue groups necessary. A lack of knowledge about how to take proper care of dogs and limited understanding of their behavior adds to increased relinquishment and abandonment rates. This contributes to the overpopulation problem and the continuing re-cycling of dogs in and out of shelters.
