” Dr. Markenson: There are currently no specific plans regarding pandemic influenza, and to be honest, if there were, they probably at this point are not different than the general pandemic influenza plans. Really, what schools need to do in terms of thinking about pandemic influenza is think about, A, the basics. Do they have an emergency preparedness plan? Are they linked with public health? Is their plan linked with public health? Is it linked with emergency management? That will get you half the way there. Then they need to think about promoting those activities in schools that will reduce the spread of any disease. Do they advocate hands washing, sanitation, good hygiene between children day to day? And I think if most schools got to that point, they would be a long way down the road.
