Are there any species of trapdoor spiders in Alabama?
Trapdoor spiders range from Virginia south to Florida and west to California. Trapdoor spider tubes are usually found in the sides of banks in disturbed areas but may also be found in grass yards and flat ground. Various species are found throughout the world, in the warm climates of tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions. http://www.desertmuseum.org/books/nhsd_t… I live in Oklahoma where I understand you can find as many as 30 individuals of trapdoor spider per square yard, sometimes. You hardly ever see one on the surface, but if you dig in heavily populated areas you will see them crawling all over the place. I usually find them when I’m gardening and inadvertently dig them up. I have found several in my yard. Get down close to the grass and have a good close look. You should be able to find some. Florida Trapdoor Spider:
