The main side-effect that occurs in all women is menstrual spotting (loss of a small amount of blood), or light bleeding as well as having periods for the first three to six months after the system is fitted. Bleeding may occur almost every day during the first four to six weeks after fitting. Overall you are likely to have a gradual reduction in the number of bleeding days, and the amount of blood lost each month. For most of the time, panty liners may be all that is required for protection. The level of hormone in the blood stream is much lower than with the progestogen only pill (POP), so side-effects such as breast tenderness, headaches, acne, abdominal bloatedness or mood changes are less likely than with the POP.
