Are there any side effects and risks associated with egg donation?
The medications and retrieval procedure associated with egg donation are considered to be safe, but there is always a certain degree of risk associated with any medication and medical procedure. However, because you will be closely monitored by a physician throughout the egg donation cycle, the risk of complications from egg donation is very low. In general, most side-effects are related to the fertility medications you will be taking, and are most commonly described as premenstrual-like symptoms (bloating, moodiness, hot flashes, etc.). These side-effects usually subside when the medications are discontinued or with your next menstrual period after the egg retrieval. Rarely (in 1% of cases), Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome can occur, in which the ovaries become enlarged and swollen. This can be serious if left untreated. However, you will be closely monitored with ultrasounds and blood tests throughout the cycle to help detect and prevent any such problem. Your physician will adjust
