Are there any schools in New York State that have specialized programs for children with ASD?
Most school age students with autism will attend public school programs designed to meet their individual needs. Each student must be educated in the least restrictive environment or “LRE”. That means that each student is educated to the maximum extent appropriate to his/her individual needs with nondisabled peers and in the school he/she would have attended if not disabled. New York State provides a continuum of alternative placements for students with disabilities, which could include placement of students in separate school programs. The New York State Education Department provides information about residential and day schools serving children with autism. The locations, services available and the ages of the children served are indicated as are the vacancies within those schools.
