Nome is located on the Seward Peninsula, on the Arctic West Coast. Nome itself has streets, and a couple of roads; but their are no roads leading to Nome. It is isolated in that respect. You have two commercial choices to get to Nome; one if by air, and two if by sea. The sea option requires some adept planning because the Ocean does freeze in early fall, and stays frozen through the winter. It is however worth the adventure to get their. Site of a major Gold Rush at the turn of the century, Nome was at one time very much the Wild West of the Arctic. During this time, Nome was was a benchmark for lawlessness. The Army was forced to move in, and martial law was established. During the course of this period Wyatt Earp even showed up in town. Of course today, Nome is noted not just for mining, but for our Iditarod sled dog race, which commemorates a diphtheria serum run by dog team in the 1920’s.
