National and state governance bodies are beginning to provide financial incentives to help homeowners improve their home’s energy efficiency. By state mandate, NSTAR and National Grid offer 75% off (up to $2,000) the total cost of insulation upgrades and air sealing for their natural gas and electric customers. Federal tax credits for energy efficiency measures are available at 30% of the cost, up to $1,500, in 2009 and 2010 (for existing homes only) for: windows and doors, insulation, roofs (metal and asphalt), HVAC, non-solar water heaters, and biomass stoves. Additional federal tax credits for energy efficiency are available at 30% of the cost, with no upper limit through 2016 (for existing homes and new construction) for: geothermal heat pumps, solar panels, solar water heaters, small wind energy systems, and fuel cells.
