Are there any problems associated with breast augmentation?
One problem that is common with breast augmentation is called capsule contracture. When an implant is inserted, your body will make a capsule around it, but 10-15 percent of the time, the capsule gets thick, squeezes the implant, the breast gets hard and becomes distorted, and it may even become painful. The only solution is surgery. We really do not know why this occurs, but there are things that we do to prevent it. There is the “no-touch” technique where only the surgeon touches the implant for about 10 seconds, attempts to insert the implant without really touching the skin and then irrigates the pocket the implant goes into with antibiotics. We also use gloves that are talc free, and no cloth is used during the surgery because even lint can become a problem. If the patient does develop capsule contracture, we go back into surgery, clean the capsule and attempt to use the implant again or depending on the surgeon, he/she may use a new implant.
