Are there any points relating to age in the Equality Act 2010 that local authorities should be aware of?

The first phase of the Equality Act 2010 came into force on 1 October 2010. The Act aims to provide a cleaner, simpler legal framework for equality. The main measure affecting age discrimination is that from 6 April 2011, a streamlined public sector equality duty extended to include age, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, and religion or belief (previously only for race, disability and gender) will be introduced. Further details of the Act are available on LG Employers’ website and Advisory Bulletin 573. We would also recommend visiting the Government Equalities Office website.
