Are there any pine martens in England and Wales?
There is good evidence of the continued presence of small populations of pine martens in the north of England and in Wales. In England, most reports come from rugged upland areas such as the Lake District, Pennines, Cheviots and North York Moors. Similarly, in Wales, the main strongholds are Snowdonia, the Cambrian Mountains and the uplands of central southern Wales. Most of this evidence comes in the form of sightings, but these patterns of distribution are reinforced by occasional carcasses, photographs, scats (droppings) and hair samples, which are verified by DNA analysis.
