Are there any perpective that show empathy towards Elizabeth Bathory/Vlad the Impaler?
For Vlad the Impaler, he was imprisoned and tortured by the Turks as a child, his father and brothers betrayed and killed by their own advisers. He would get his long thought of and spiteful revenge slowly by killing and impaling the ignoble nobles who betrayed his family, impaling the corpse of Turkish armies and would reign with an iron fist that enforced the harshest of laws without mitigation based on age, gender, religion, or social standings. His often exaggerated exploits were the product of the cruelty of his childhood. For a more sympathetic telling of his tale look towards the tales the Wallacians tell. For Elizabeth Bathory I know of none. Although both of these peoples evils are believed to be at least partially exaggerated. For Vlad, Matthias Corvinus send boatloads of propaganda exaggerating Vlad’s villainy to distract from and excuse the fact that he misused funds given to him to aid in Vlad’s war with the Turks.
