Are there any options for irreversible liver failure?
Liver transplantation is an option for patients with irreversible liver failure. Most transplants are done for chronic liver diseases leading to cirrhosis, such as chronic hepatitis C, alcoholism, autoimmune hepatitis, and many others. Rarer is a liver transplantation performed for hepatic failure, when liver failure occurs over days to weeks such as in the case of Ketek. Liver transplantation is the definitive treatment for liver failure, but is not an option for all patients and the supply of livers is limited.
