Are there any old timers out there who remember powdered egg, Spam,Ration books and Camp coffee, etc? ?
Yes, I remember ration books. Powdered egg was nice, Mum used to make lovely omelettes with it and scrambled egg. She used it for cakes but it made them very yellow. Spam fritters were quite nice and you could have spam in your sandwiches. My Dad was not a tea drinker so had to use Camp Coffee (with chicory). It had a picture of a Scotsman in kilt sitting on a chair with an Indian servant holding a tray with the coffee on. Not exactly politically correct! There was another brand of coffee called Bev but Dad didn’t like it so much. We used to eat corned beef more than Spam (still a favourite of mine) and Mum made patties with corned beef, mashed potato and onion. These were dredged with flour and fried. We always had them with baked beans – lovely. Oh condensed milk, the fight to clean the tin out!! Until you have eaten a condensed milk sandwich you have not lived! A good recipe with condensed milk was mix with dessicated coconut, form into balls and put in a low oven to gently brown. T
