Are there any non-addictive non-SSRI medications for cases of acute anxiety and depression (primarily anxiety)?
As with all medical treatment an accurate diagnosis is essential. Confusion can occur from the fact that precise medical diagnoses have been given names such as depression or anxiety. For example the medical condition anxiety is comparatively rare. Whereas anxiousness is a common symptom of the medical condition depression. I realise that this may appear pedantic, but the distinction is of great importance in the selection of medication. Regrettably it is not uncommon for the anxiousness, to be treated in isolation. The most common treatment has been the addictive benzodiazepines such as diazepam, sometimes called by its trade name Valium. When this happens it is possible for the patient with the condition depression to become worse. The selective serotonin reputake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most recent medication group to be introduced in the treatment of depression.
