Are there any nanoparticles we already live with?
We have been encountering nanotechnology ever since we began burning wood and going to the beach. The exhaust pipes of cars and the soot from campfires contain nanoparticles. Some of the salt just above the ocean exists at the nanoscale and you breath it in every time you sit on a beach. Almost any powder or chemical you use has some particles at the nanoscale. Almost all drugs we use or buy over the counter have active molecular ingredients that are at the angstrom (even smaller than the nano) scale. The main ingredients of asphalt and rubber tires contain nanoparticles. Even the “old” formulations of sunscreens used before we started talking about nanotech contained nanoparticles – the new ones just have a slightly higher percentage. If we labelled everything that contained nanoparticles there would be a label on practically everything you owned or used because chances are, it’s got some nanoparticles in it somewhere.
