Are there any medical and pharmacological treatments for hair loss?
Yes. A first medication, Rogaine (or minoxodil), must be applied to the scalp at least twice a day for the remainder of a person’s life. The effect is unpredictable on an eventual regrowth of new hair. If there is a positive effect, it will disappear once the person stops applying the product. Another product, called Propecia, must be taken orally once a day. It can help keep existing hair in place for a longer period. It can also help strengthen hairs that have been weakened by baldness. The possible side effects are rare (in less than 1% of cases: reduced sexual desire and impotence in a manner that is usually temporary and reversible).
