The scanlators would translate things and the companies would figure out what was popular and what to buy. The scanlators would then remove scanlations once a company bought the rights to it and move on to a new series. This acted as free advertising to the newly printed series and people would go out and buy it. One day, however, scanlators decided to stop removing the scans once the license was bought by a company. Because of this, fans of the series continued to read online instead of going out to buy the volumes and eventually bred a whole generation of manga fans who had never bought a single manga.
