Are there any manga sites still up and running?
Several years ago, the manga publishing giants of America and scanlators lived in harmony and worked together. The scanlators would translate things and the companies would figure out what was popular and what to buy. The scanlators would then remove scanlations once a company bought the rights to it and move on to a new series. This acted as free advertising to the newly printed series and people would go out and buy it. One day, however, scanlators decided to stop removing the scans once the license was bought by a company. Because of this, fans of the series continued to read online instead of going out to buy the volumes and eventually bred a whole generation of manga fans who had never bought a single manga. American manga companies started going out of business. The big giants, Viz and Tokyopop, managed to stay afloat by dropping titles and cutting staff.
