J G is hilariously wrong in most of his answer, so you can count that one out pretty easily. Are you looking at a Cherokee (Liberty in the US) or a Grand Cherokee? Drivetrain-wise either one will likely do you fine, reliability’s decent, and most everything is fairly cheap to fix. Later models actually tend to be somewhat cheaper to fix as parts prices are down a good deal. If you’re looking at the Liberty/Cherokee, make sure you test drive one and bring the whole family along. Particularly up until the 07 models, they’re a fairly small vehicle, and may be cramped if you’re tall or overweight. Cargo space is also limited in the older models. If you’re looking at the Grand Cherokee, they remain fairly similar in interior sizes across the years you’re looking at. While the I6 and V6 engines used are adequate, a V8 will give you more power and noticeably better performance. Earlier models (99-02, I think?) had problems with warping brake rotors, but pretty much any vehicle should have had
