Are there any languages that don have swear words in their vocabulary?
“Swear words” are more accurately known as taboo words. Different languages have different types of taboo words. In English, our taboo words are related to human genitalia, human reproduction, and waste elimination. In other languages, taboo words are related to death and spiritual beings. In some languages, words related to one’s in-laws are taboo. We use taboo words to “swear” in the sense that we use them as mild (or not-so-mild) curses on another. The same is true in other languages, the inappropriate use of taboo words is to curse another or bring another bad luck. For example, speaking a dead person’s name will cause that person’s ghost to appear and cause mischief. Speaking the name of a spiritual being will cause that being to “wake up” and come to do harm.
