Are there any justifiable reasons for abortion, any at all?

I get really frustrated when people state that killing a baby is okay as long as rape is involved. That makes no sense. That should then justify all abortion. You can’t say when killing a fetus is right or wrong. Either it is or isn’t. I agree that women AND men should make this decision and not government, just don’t convince yourself that murder is okay in certain situations. I have aborted in the past and know damn well why, I was terrified and unsure of how to handle a baby. It was not justified, it was murder, but the best decision I felt able to make at the time and I will not feel guilty about it 14 years later.

I’m not FOR abortions. I AM however, ProChoice. Until Men can become pregnant and deliver a baby I don’t believe they should be allowed to cast an iron clad ruling on what a Woman can or cannot do with her own body. Of course I believe there are justifiable reasons for abortions. Some of “those” reasons most likely wouldn’t fit into MY personal criteria at all. Others assuredly WOULD fit my personal thoughts. Rape, incest, a threat to the health condition of the mother or the possible CHILD to be. I say this last one because I have a friend whose older married sister had one child successfully. They tried for a second one, she became pregnant, but during the routine tests they discovered that the fetus had multiple and non-corrective health challenges/conditions. Downs, heart, possible blindness. The mother was over 40 and in my opinion shouldn’t have been trying for another child, but she wanted one. With her doctor’s advice, they chose to abort. She was actively depressed for over 3

The answer you get to this question will depend on who you ask, but in my way of thinking there are only three reasons that justify abortion, rape, incest, or cases where continuing with the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother. I don’t believe abortion is justified because the mother just does not want the baby. In my mind, if you don’t want a baby, then you should not be engaged in the kind of activity that could produce a baby. (BTW, this applies to any activity. If you don’t want something to happen, then don’t engage in activities that are like to produce the undesired result.) ************** In his/her “answer”, educator9445 asked a number of good questions. Let me address them in order. > What if the mother refuses to take care of herself during pregnancy. > For instance, what if she uses drugs, smokes, doesn’t go to the doctor. > All of these things can cause irreperable harm to the fetus. This is all true. I often wonder what a pregnant woman is thinking when I see her l

It does depend who you ask but I tend to think the main justifiable reason is if the life or long term health of the mother is in serious danger. You can argue all you like for the rights of the unborn, but I tend to think the rights of the already-born take precedence in that situation. I also think that there is justification to abortion in case of incest, and rape. I simply don’t think that a woman should be asked to bear the emotional strain of having a child by a father or brother, or by someone who has violently attacked her in order to force her to have sex against her will. Finally I think there is some justification in the case of very very young girls (I’m talking 12,13 ish here) I don’t think many girls that young are capable of taking the physical and mental strain of a pregnancy and childbirth and it would be horrendously unfair to ask them to put themselves through that at such a young age. In general I think abortion is far too easy in the UK- there are some women who be

A fairly recent article on this subject really opened my eyes to the abortion debate. Up until I read it, I had been a supporter of abortion, but only in a “lesser of two evils” sense. I believed that women who had abortions without any of the major justifications; rape, incest, danger to health of mother, were to be seen as lacking in conscience and to be pitied. My view was reinforced by the fact that most of society adopts this view; no one is allowed to say “Yes, abortion is acceptable, and it’s not the lesser of two evils, it’s an important and vital freedom”. Women who have these abortions are always described as being wracked with guilt, shame and sorrow. However, after reading this article, and following up with some personal research, I found that this is a dangerous position to adopt. For one thing, I consistently found that the amount of women that are happy with their choices were much higher than the women who felt the guilt and shame which is quite often sensationalised a
