Last year when I was developing a proposal, I need to create some scheduling charts (Gantt) and some resource allocation charts. We didn’t have Project, so I looked for something I could get immediately, without having to go through the requisition process. I found Open Workbench. It did everything I needed it to, and the Forums were great. If you are already familiar with Project, then you should pick this up pretty quickly. Open Workbench advertises it as follows: “Open Workbench is an open source desktop application that provides robust project scheduling and management functionality. Already the scheduling standard for more than 100,000 project managers worldwide, Open Workbench is a free and powerful alternative to Microsoft Project.” There are some limitations however. I found there were some issues with the charting program (I wanted to create a Gantt chart showing the schedule in weeks after award date, but could only display them based on an actual date.
