Are there any good martial art instruction DVDs?
There are many good martial arts instructional DVD’s. Obviously they’re no substitute for actual instruction, but they can help supplement your knowledge. Unfortunately the bad ones far outnumber the good. There are very few I’d endorse. Anything by Mark Hatmaker is pretty good; for head-and-arm chokes, “Fade to Black” by Jason Quick is excellent; the Panther videos that Larry Tatum put out were rather informative; Kelly McCann, AKA Jim Grover, put out some simple-but-effective self-defense videos. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any other good ones at the moment. But yes, they’re out there. Just read the reviews and make sure it’s something you’d like before you lay down the dollars on it. More importantly, get someone who knows what they’re doing to help you with your training. For example, I train with Hatmaker several times a year, and he can correct me on what I’m doing wrong.
