Are there any good comedy writing tips out there?
I think quality comedy writing springs from quality comedy reading. Check out silly writers like Dave Barry and then move on to drier comedy writers — see which style suits you. When I’m writing something funny, I like to combine ideas that wouldn’t usually be combined and impossible coincidences. Barry is a master at this. The first site below features some lesson-type ideas and examples under the “Comedy Library” section. I’ve also included a link to Yahoo’s humor section. There are some quirky writers on that site. A previous poster suggested not trying too hard. I agree. It’s obvious to readers when a writer goes all out and comes off as corny. Good luck! This is a great genre to write.
