Yes, there are free programs. One is at www.familysearch.org under Order/Download products. This is the site for the Church of Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ (Mormon) which holds the largest collection of genealogical records in the world. You can also conduct many searches at this site. However, let me warn you — genealogy is “addictive” and pretty soon you will find that you have invested hours of your time and energy into searching and collecting information. Free programs are not the best for this. So when you are ready to invest a little money, I suggest that you buy a discounted copy of Family Tree Maker. I have used this program since it first came out and I am very pleased with it. Good luck.
