As already said Turner was one of the most famous sea scape painters. He would paint directly from life during his watercolour and oil roughs, then compose the finished painting in oils in the studio, which was more common at that time, before the Impressionists began to paint directly from life later. He reportedly once tied himself to a ships mast to experience a stormy sea, so his work is quite dramatic!
