Yes, New Jersey does impose car seat laws, but with only one slight exemption: Children younger than eight years old who weigh fewer than 80 pounds must be properly secured in either a child safety seat or a booster in the rear seat of the car; however, the child may sit in the front seat only if there is no rear seat.
