FEMA, through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), NOAA, and USGS are co-funding a $540,000 pilot project to develop risk identification products that will help communities understand their actual level of risk from tsunami in a way that could be conveyed on our existing flood maps. The goal of the project is to develop techniques that can be used to determine the probability and magnitude of tsunami in other communities along the west coast of the United States. The location of the pilot project is Seaside, Oregon. FEMA’s NFIP is involved because FEMA is responsible for mapping areas subject to flooding in order to properly rate flood insurance policies and provide risk assessment information to States and local communities.
