Are there any effective water filtration systems that can be used to remove lead?
The National Sanitation Foundation has a Water Treatment Device Certification Program in place. There are filters that can be installed onto the drinking water tap that will effectively filter out lead. There are also effective treatment systems which include distillation, reverse osmosis and adsorption systems. These filters and systems may be effective in homes that contain lead plumbing; however they require regular maintenance to function properly. If these systems are not properly maintained they may promote the growth of bacteria and cause other water quality problems. Customers should ensure that they only use home treatment systems in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
