As far as commercial oven cleaners, Arm and Hammer oven cleaner is considered non toxic, and Restore makes a non toxic oven cleaner (restoreproducts.com). Self cleaning ovens use heat to bake off the crust. Homemade cleaners: Heavy duty- 16oz baking soda, 4 tablsp of Citra-solv cleaner and degreaser concentrate and water. Put baking soda in a bowl add Citra-sol then add water gradually to make a thick paste. Spread on bottom of oven let stand for 1-3 hours. Use a scrubby sponge to wipe up grime. Use steel wool for stubborn stains. Best to use rubber gloves. Regular cleaning, sprinkle baking soda and spray with water to create a paste, let stand for upto 12 hours, keep moist with water, wipe up with scrubby sponge. It is best to prevent spills and splatters. I use a lid as much as possible, I put cookie sheets under anything that might bubble over and many people use foil or trays in the bottom of the oven.
