Are there any dos and don’ts for when I’m going sightseeing?
Check beforehand for days when tourist attractions may be closed. Most museums, for instance, are closed on Mondays, though site museums (near archaeological sites or monuments) are often closed on Fridays. Other than that, be on your guard when you visit religious places: it’s easy to offend without meaning to. Mostly, dressing conservatively (everything between shoulders and knees covered), covering your head, and taking off your shoes at the entrance, should be sufficient. In any case, do check, since some religious places may have further restrictions. Jain temples, for example, usually forbid all leather articles, including wallets, belts and watch straps. What’s more, some Hindu temples are open only to Hindus. And yes, resist the urge to light up when you’re in a public place. Smoking is prohibited in all public places, including trains and railway stations, where a violation can attract a stiff penalty.
